Masterplanning & Urban Design Studio
Strategic thinking. Design rigour. And a belief that better places start with the people who will live and thrive in them.
Selected Projects
Katrina McBride has always believed in the power of shared experience — whether through the music she plays or the places she designs. kmbre exists to channel that belief into masterplanning and urban design that puts people first, always.
About kmbreSelected Projects
The experience behind the studio
kmbre is newly launched, but the expertise behind it isn't. Built on over 18 years of experience leading complex masterplanning and urban design projects across the UK. The work below is a snapshot of that experience — and forms the foundation for what comes next.
A major urban extension opportunity to the north east of Glasgow, with the potential to create a genuinely new piece of city. The masterplan weaves up to 6,000 new homes, a new high street, local centres and community facilities into the existing landscape of the Seven Lochs Wetland Park — creating a place where people can truly put down roots.
A landscape-led response to a sensitive Green Belt site on the edge of Billericay — demonstrating that thoughtful, people-centred design can make a compelling case even in the most challenging planning contexts. The project has progressed from Local Plan representations through to a submitted Outline Planning Application, supported by a site-specific design code and Design and Access Statement.
A residential development of up to 500 new homes on the edge of Inverurie, working with Barratt Redrow to create a place that feels genuinely rooted in its Aberdeenshire setting. Currently being promoted through Local Plan representations.
A major landscape recovery project transforming approximately 622 hectares of agricultural land in East Yorkshire into a dynamic, species-rich wetland. Working with Albanwise Environment, Natural England and Defra, the masterplan balances ambitious ecological restoration with meaningful public access — creating a place where people and nature can genuinely thrive together.
A village-scale residential development of approximately 200 new homes on the edge of Ormiston, prepared for Places for People. The vision goes beyond delivering new homes — it's about creating a community where people feel they belong from day one.
A sensitive rural development in the heart of Norfolk, working with a private landowner to create a design-led vision for new homes that respond carefully to the character, scale and setting of the existing village — and to the people who already call it home.
What we offer
Every project is different. Every client has their own ambitions, challenges and constraints. From the earliest site promotion through to detailed design and planning consent, kmbre brings rigorous thinking, genuine design care and a personal commitment to every project — whatever its scale, and always with the people who will live and thrive there at its heart.
Every great place begins with a great vision. kmbre develops masterplans that are clear and compelling — working for people, for place and for planning, persuasive enough to gain support, and human enough to create places people will genuinely love.
Expert support through outline, hybrid and reserved matters applications — drawing on Katrina's extensive experience navigating complex, sensitive and contested sites to achieve successful outcomes.
Every site is different. kmbre develops design codes and frameworks that are tailored to exactly what you and your project needs — giving you the clarity, confidence and quality assurance to deliver successfully.
Complex projects need clear, confident leadership. Katrina brings extensive experience leading multidisciplinary teams that have included planning, architecture, landscape, transport and engineering professionals — keeping everybody focused and communicating clearly. So you'll always know where your project stands, and so will everybody working on it.
Place-led design that goes beyond the plan — creating neighbourhoods with real identity, legibility and genuine liveability. Always grounded in a deep understanding of people and place, and a belief that the best neighbourhoods are the ones where people truly feel they belong.
Regeneration and mixed-use sites are rarely straightforward — they come with complex histories, competing demands and high expectations. Katrina brings a people-centred approach and sharp commercial awareness to these challenges, creating design solutions that are as viable as they are visionary.
Our approach
At kmbre, every project receives Katrina's direct input and personal commitment — from first conversation to final submission. There are no juniors handed the work once you've signed the contract.
Rigorous thinking and genuine design care, always with the people who will live and thrive there at the heart of it.
Start a conversationThe studio
kmbre was born from a lifelong belief in the power of shared experience. Founded by Katrina McBride — masterplanner, urban designer and musician — the studio exists to create places where people are free to connect, belong and thrive.
Our clients are private developers, housing associations and government organisations who share one thing in common — an ambition to create truly great places, and the wisdom to bring in the right expertise to deliver them.
As a studio, we believe that the best masterplans aren't just technically sound — they tell a story. They create identity. They make people want to be there, to belong, and to thrive. That conviction runs through everything we do, from some of the largest and most complex urban extensions to sensitive rural site promotions.
kmbre is also committed to embracing the best of contemporary tools — including AI and digital technologies — while keeping the human judgement, experience and creativity that no algorithm can replicate firmly at the centre of our work.
